About the festival
"The Beirut Spring Festival", created and launched in 2009 by the Samir Kassir Foundation, is inspired by the title of one of the last articles written by Samir Kassir, shortly before his assassination in 2005.

This event, targeting the broad general public, is unique both in its concept and program. The goals of the Festival and its particular character have generated such a warm welcome from the public.

The Festival is the first of its kind in Beirut.

The Festival features multidisciplinary international performances (theater, music, dance, conferences...) revolving around the themes of tolerance and cultural diversity, especially in societies facing violence and injustice.

The Festival features exclusive one-night performances scheduled over a week in different venues across Beirut.

The Festival supports contemporary art creation and energizes Lebanon’s cultural and artistic life, built on the belief that art is the ultimate way to tolerance.

The Festival thrives on the young generation’s interest in maintaining ties with the vision and thoughts of Samir Kassir.

The free admission to the Festival provides all categories of the Lebanese society with unrestricted access to original, non commercial art works.
This festival has grown thanks to the financial and moral support of friends, sponsors and especially the civil society.

Thank you for your loyalty,

A tribute to the late Lebanese Canadian writer and director Majdi Bou Matar - Founder of the MT Space Company, Canada

“The Last 15 Seconds”

A theatre play in English with Arabic and French subtitles

This performance is sponsored by the Canadian Embassy in Lebanon.

 Sunflower Theatre, Tayyouneh

This performance is sponsored by the Canadian Embassy in Lebanon.

Majdi Bou Matar is a Lebanese theatre director and performer who immigrated to Canada from Lebanon in 2003. He had a particular way of seeing the world.

Through his art, he showcased a vision that could cut between time, distance and culture to bring untold stories to the world. He was the artistic director and founder of the MT Space and IMPACT Festival, as well as a performer.

A fierce advocate for the unheard voice, Bou-Matar spent his life as a champion for free expression, speaking truth to power, and turning dreams into reality.

Bou-Matar died suddenly on June 2022 while touring “The Last 15 Seconds” through Hungary. He was 47.

Based on a true story, The Last 15 Seconds explores the topic of terrorism starting from the tragic death of Syrian- American filmmaker Mustapha Akkad and his daughter Rima during a series of coordinated attacks that hit three prominent hotels in the Jordanian capital Amman in 2005.

Akkad is the director of two major films both starring Anthony Quinn: The Message: The Story of Islam (1976) and Lion of the Desert (1982). Akkad saw these films as a way to bridge the gap between the Western and Islamic world. He was also the producer of the Halloween film series.

Using movement, dance, video, vocals and text, the work constructs an imagined physical and verbal dialogue between Mustapha Akkad and Rawad Jassem Abed, the suicide bomber who carried out the explosion that killed Akkad. The work also looks at the imagined lives and memories of both the victim and his killer as they revisit each other's lives after their fatal encounter.

A play by the Iranian writer Nassim Soleimanpour

 With Fouad Yammine

In Lebanese dialect with English subtitles

A premiere in Lebanon supported by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation

Le Monnot Theatre

A premiere in Lebanon supported by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation

The visionary playwright Nassim Soleimanpour was denied a passport in his native Iran because of his refusal to complete his military service. Unable to travel, he decided to write a play which could travel the world in his place.

The audience joins the performer on a journey into the unknown; stumbling upon the “personal and profound, riffing on the limits of liberty and exploring where theatre can take you, with or without a passport.”

Told in the author’s voice and using allegorical animals to make its points about power and society, the play is described as intense, comic and unnerving.

Despite the lack of director or rehearsals “White Rabbit Red Rabbit” is a powerful and audacious theatrical experiment that has been celebrated worldwide as one of the most astonishing evenings in theatre.

Since its joint premiere in 2011 in Edinburgh at the Summerhall and the Summerworks festival “White Rabbit Red Rabbit” has been translated into 15 different languages and been performed over 200 times by some of the biggest names in theatre and film including actors Arthur Darvill, Stephen Rea, John Hurt, Katie Dickie and Siobhan Redmond, comedians Sue Perkins, Phill Jupitus and Mark Watson, and film maker Ken Loach.
