In a country where the fight for truth and freedom often unfolds in silence and in the shadows, photojournalists' lenses have never looked away.


As part of its ongoing commitment to defending press freedom and freedom of expression, the Samir Kassir Foundation, with the support of the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Beirut, presents a national exhibition called “20 Years for Freedom” at the Art on 56th gallery in Beirut.


From Thursday 28 August to Saturday 6 September 2025, the exhibition commemorates two decades since the assassination of Samir Kassir by honoring the photojournalists whose unwavering dedication has documented Lebanon’s struggles, hopes, and defining moments since 2005.

“20 Years for Freedom” — A Photo Exhibition of Lebanon’s Ongoing Struggle for Freedom

Yesterday marked the opening of the photo exhibition “20 Years for Freedom”, organized by the Samir Kassir Foundation as part of the Beirut Spring Festival. The exhibition brings together the work of eight Lebanese photojournalists – Tamara Saadé, Hussein Baydoun, Hassan Shaaban, Rabih Yassine, Marwan Tahtah, Carmen Yahchouchi, Jamal Saidi, and Mohamad Yassin – who have chronicled Lebanon’s struggles, hopes, and defining moments since 2005. Arthur Sarradin curated the exhibition.


The exhibition commemorates twenty years since the assassination of journalist and historian Samir Kassir, whose life and work remain a symbol of freedom of expression in Lebanon and the region.


By presenting images that capture both the pain and determination of the Lebanese people, the exhibition highlights the vital role of photography in upholding truth and combating oppression. Freedom was at the core of Samir Kassir’s writings, and this exhibition continues his fight by giving voice to those who record history with their lenses.


The exhibition also aims to promote and highlight soora.store, a newly launched online platform dedicated to supporting Lebanese photojournalists and making their work accessible to international audiences. Soora offers a space where photography meets sustainability and advocacy, providing both visibility and income opportunities for journalists working under challenging conditions.


In his opening speech, Ayman Mhanna, Executive Director of the Samir Kassir Foundation, said: “We may not find Samir’s photos in this space, but he is present in every corner. In the call for Lebanon’s sovereignty, in the struggle to end dictatorship in Syria, in the rejection of political assassinations in Lebanon, in confronting Israel’s crimes against the Lebanese and Palestinian peoples, in the commitment to press freedom, to human rights and dignity, to women’s rights, to rejecting sectarian dominance, and in the dream of a Lebanon liberated from corruption and reconciled with its memory. These are Samir’s values, and these images are a continuation of his legacy.”


Reidun Otterøy, Deputy Head of Mission at the Norwegian Embassy in Lebanon, added: “Tonight is a reminder that images are powerful and transcend borders, language, and time. They can inform and document, ignite empathy and engagement, and spark global solidarity. I think we all have photos that we don’t forget because they are both stunning and hard to watch. Photojournalists are frontline storytellers, and sometimes, unfortunately, they are victims of violence and war. Around the world, journalists are coming under attack, being killed or injured.”


The exhibition will run at Art on 56th in Gemmayzeh, Beirut, from August 28 to September 6, 2025 (excluding Mondays and Sundays), from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM.


This event is organized as part of the Beirut Spring Festival and is supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"عشرون عاماً من أجل الحرية" – معرض صور لمصورين صحافيين لبنانيين

 افتتحت مؤسسة سمير قصير بالأمس معرض الصور "عشرون عاماً من أجل الحرية" ضمن فعاليات مهرجان ربيع بيروت. يضم المعرض أعمال ثمانية مصورين صحافيين لبنانيين هم تمارا سعادة، حسين بيضون، حسن شعبان، ربيع ياسين، مروان طحطح، كارمن يحشوشي، جمال السعيدي، ومحمد ياسين، الذين وثقوا نضالات اللبنانيين وآمالهم واللحظات المفصلية التي مرّ بها لبنان منذ عام 2005. أشرف آرثر سري الدين على الإدارة الفنية للمعرض.


يأتي المعرض إحياءً للذكرى العشرين لاغتيال الصحافي والمؤرخ سمير قصير، الذي تبقى مسيرته رمزاً لحرية التعبير في لبنان والمنطقة.


من خلال صور تجسد الألم كما الصمود، يسلط المعرض الضوء على الدور الأساسي للتصوير الصحافي في الدفاع عن الحقيقة ومواجهة القمع. كانت الحرية في صلب كتابات سمير قصير، ويستكمل هذا المعرض رسالته عبر عدسات من اختاروا أن يكونوا شهوداً على التاريخ.


ويهدف المعرض أيضاً إلى تسليط الضوء على منصة "صورة" الإلكترونية التي أطلقتها المؤسسة حديثاً لدعم المصورين الصحافيين اللبنانيين وإيصال أعمالهم إلى جمهور دولي أوسع. تجمع المنصة بين التوثيق والدعم المستدام، وتفتح المجال أمام المصورين لتحقيق دخل وفرص انتشار رغم الظروف الصعبة.


وقال أيمن مهنا، المدير التنفيذي لمؤسسة سمير قصير في كلمته الافتتاحية: "قد لا نجد صور سمير في هذا الفضاء، لكنه حاضر في كل زاوية: في السَّعي إِلى سيادة لبنان، في النِّضال لِإِنهاءِ الدكتاتورية في سوريا، في رفض الاغتيال السياسي، في مواجهة جرائم إسرائيل بحقِّ الشّعبين اللبناني والفلسطيني، في الالتزام بحرية الصحافة، في الدفاع عن حقوق الإنسان وكرامته، عن حقوق المرأة، في رَفضِ العنصريّة، في حلم التحرّر من قهر السلطات الدينية، في الرغبة بلبنان محرَّر من الفساد وَمُتصالح مع الذاكرة. هذه هي معارك سمير، وهذه الصور هي استمرارٌ لها."


وأضافت ريتون أوتوروي، القائمة بأعمال السفارة النروجية في لبنان: "هذه الليلة تذكير بأن الصور قوية وتتجاوز الحدود واللغة والزمن. الصور تستطيع أن توثق وتعلّم، أن تثير التعاطف والتفاعل، وأن تشعل تضامناً عالمياً. أعتقد أن لكل واحد منا صوراً لا تُنسى لأنها مدهشة وصعبة في آن. المصورون الصحافيون هم رواة القصة في الخطوط الأمامية، وللأسف، أحياناً يكونون هم أيضاً ضحايا العنف والحرب. حول العالم، يتعرض الصحافيون للهجوم، ويُقتلون أو يُصابون."


يستمر المعرض في Art on 56th – الجميزة، بيروت من 28 آب حتى 6 أيلول 2025 (باستثناء يومي الاثنين والأحد)، يومياً من الساعة 11 صباحاً حتى 6 مساءً.


يُنظم هذا النشاط ضمن مهرجان ربيع بيروت وبدعم من وزارة الخارجية النروجية.
